Who needs to provide an English test?

If English is not your first language, and you have not successfully completed university qualifications that were fully taught and examined in English, you need to provide an English language test with your Application.

This still applies if:

  • You are currently studying a university qualification taught in English but have not successfully completed it yet: you still need to provide an English language test.
  • Only part of your university qualification was taught and examined in English e.g. if you spent a semester of your studies as an exchange student at an English speaking institution: you still need to provide an English language test.

Some courses may require a wider group of applicants to complete an English language test. If so, they will give details in the Documents for Specific Course Centres section of your Application. If you are already providing an IELTS test in the Documents for All Course Centres section you do not need to upload this twice.

What kind of test and what scores are needed?

All course centres accept an IELTS test.

This should be an Academic test taken in the last two years, though some courses may require a more recent test.

The scores you need vary from course to course, ranging from 6.5 to 8.0.

Some courses accept other English language tests e.g. Pearson, TOEFL, Cambridge etc, but some courses may only accept IELTS.

What if I'm waiting for the results?

Please allow yourself plenty of time to sit the test and get the results.

You must submit your Application by 1.00pm UK time on 22 November 2023.

If you will get the test results in December or January, on the Documents page tick the relevant “Provide later” box and email a good quality copy of the results to us as soon as you have them.

All applications are released to the Course Centres by the end of January.

If you will not get the test results until February or later you should consider whether to apply this year or not. Documents received after the last applications have been released at the end of January are unlikely to be available to the Course Centres for their short-listing process.
